Raising a glass of lemonade to my incredible sister today. #PeopleIAdmire
Most of us go through life paying tribute to our friends and family once they are no more. I’m guilty of it. Words of praise fill our timelines, diaries, speeches. It’s not wrong. It’s one of the best ways to honour them.
But, certain events have transpired that have shifted my perspective a little and I’ve decided to consciously do it more often when friends and family are still around, because in the words of a wise man - “The trouble is, you think you have time”
So Naomi, this one’s for you:
As an older sister, I’m supposed to inspire you, help you and live by example, but you’ve been the teacher and the inspirer.
I am in awe of everything you have accomplished so far. Personally and professionally.
On your birthday, I’d let others speak about your business acumen, your chic sense of style and your vibrant personality. I want to let you (and everyone) know about all the things that make you so very special to me:
Your brutal honesty cuts like a knife - butter knife. You’ve always known how to present it as is, without hurting the other person.
Your value for relationships. I know this because I am on the receiving end of it.
The sacrifices you’ve made for our family. You’ve always put us first. We are forever indebted to you.
I’ve been living in the shadow of your creativity for years now, it’s a pretty colourful place to be. Right from the paintings to the wall art - can your hand get any steadier??
Your ability to see the good even in some pretty hopeless people. Where do you even get the strength to do this? where are you hiding that pot of patience?
I am very very proud of everything you’ve accomplished professionally too. You’ve introduced me to some of the brightest and most innovative social entrepreneurs. I’ve seen you encourage them by purchasing their products and amplifying their good work by telling every one you meet. (if you are looking to purchase from and support a bunch of social entrepreneurs, you should contact my sister!)
Your curiosity. Whether it’s UI, UX or your quest to become the best appam maker!
Your communication skills and ability to make everyone that you encounter feel so comfortable - be it our nieces and nephews or the old aunties that wanted you to become a nun.
Today, I want to celebrate your authenticity.
I am blessed to have you as my sister, even though I spend a few childhood years making you believe you were a stone hearted child we adopted.
You are my source of strength, my confidante and the only person that has dared to sell all my stuff when I moved away.
Mama, Dada and me extremely proud of you.
We also know since you are the smarter one in the family, you will make those million bucks, so we are being nice to you.
Happy Birthday!
Shine bright, my little pest.
